The IRS warned Thursday of two fraudulent schemes that use the IRS's name in an
attempt to get victims to install malicious Trojan Horse software on their
computers. In the first scam, the e-mail claims to come from the IRS Criminal
Investigation division. It says that the victim is under investigation for
filing a false tax return. The second scam e-mail says a complaint about the
victim's "business services" has been brought against them and advises that this
can be arbitrated by the IRS.

Segmented and tailored e-mail messages can be a key driver for sales and
personalized follow up can turn a one-time customer into a loyal repeat one.
This was a key finding from a recent report sponsored by RightNow Technologies
and conducted by Harris Interactive. The "Online Retail Report" revealed that 68
percent of consumers said they were prompted to browse a Web site after
receiving an e-mail from a retailer, and 73 percent said they would appreciate
any post-purchase follow up.

Google has launched a tool designed to make it easier for computer users to use
online applications offline. One of the key limitations of web services such as
e-mail, word processing and calendars, is that they require a net connection to
function. Gears allows access to online data and applications inside the web
browser when offline. Using Gears, online data that is usually held on web
servers can be stored offline on an individual's computer. Gears works in most
of the leading web browsers.

I've had quite a few emails this week from companies that are looking to get
into the search engine marketing (specifically search optimization) game and
most of them are making a common, but sometimes major mistake. They're waiting
until their sites are built or their redesigns are complete before seeking out
search engine optimization advice. Take a deep breath and stop putting all your
focus in to creating something that looks great, but might never find its way in
front of its intended audience.

Think of it: A cheap, direct means of working one-on-one, one-to-many with
customers, partners, prospects. The ideal means of educating... informing...
persuading. That's what management sees when you mention one of the "hottest"
communications tools available... blogging. Technorati, a research firm that
tracks Internet activity, reports that it currently tracks 70 million blogs—up
from 35 million blogs less than a year ago—and that 22 of the 100 most popular
Web sites in Q4 of 2006 were blogs.
